Indonesia’s Hidden Gem for Upstream Travelers

Some travelers go with the flow, traveling following a bucket list. But for the upstream travelers, they push against the current, following their own path.

A 45 minute flight across the water from Bali, Lombok draws a fraction of the city’s visitors, making it one of Asia’s most underrated destinations. For travelers already planning Bali, it is an easy addition, but a different world. With an indigenous history dating back over 2000 years, the nearby island offers a look into life shaped by the Sasak people.

Though less crowded, Lombok is not empty, and offers a sense of authenticity exclusive to the island at the crossroads of nature’s raw beauty and Sasak heritage.

The Sira, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, provides a gateway to the vibrant island of Lombok through their experiences rooted in place, from South Sea pearl farm visits and turtle conservation initiatives to encounters with local artisans, fishermen, and Sasak traditions. With access to untouched beaches, meaningful cultural immersion, and a growing luxury hospitality scene, the 60-key (46 suites, 14 private villas) resort is perfect for travelers seeking travel at the crossroads of luxury and purpose.

The Sira's Destination Discoveries program is built for travelers who aren’t satiated by the sights, but want to understand a place through experience. Each offering at The Sira is designed to feel personal and unscripted, and each leads somewhere most visitors to Indonesia never go.

The South Sea Pearl: Lombok is one of the world's primary sources of South Sea pearls. Guests can visit a 30-year-old pearl farm to learn how oysters are seeded, tended and harvested. The visit ends with each guest opening an oyster and keeping the pearl they extract, with the option of setting it in a piece of jewelry to carry home.

Through a partnership with the Nipah Beach Turtle Conservation Center, established in December 2025, guests learn about the life cycle of sea turtles and then release hatchlings on Sira Beach. More than 900 hatchlings have already made the journey to the sea. Releases follow natural hatching cycles, so no two are quite the same.

Lombok’s Highlands A trek through the foothills of Mount Rinjani passes the waterfalls of Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep before reaching the Sasak village of Bayan, where ancestral bamboo homes stand beside the Bayan Beleq Mosque, among the oldest on the island.

Each experience at The Sira is woven into daily life, not underpinned by performance. They act as a doorway into daily life in North Lombok and how its people live, farm, fish and interact with their home, making the swim upstream worth it.
