The PR Net 100, 2024: Pea Nation

A distinguished communications executive known for her expertise in PR, culture, and social impact campaigns, Janna Pea has seen her agency, Pea Nation, thrive within its first year. Early achievements include a significant project supporting Melinda French Gates’ team on women and economic power, where the agency skillfully translated complex global economic issues into relatable content through the stories of five women. Pea Nation has also provided strategic guidance to leading global apparel brands on advancing DEI initiatives. Their work with Open to All involved navigating branding challenges and participating in sensitive, off-the-record discussions, underscoring their role in strategic communications. In the arts and culture sector, the agency has partnered with the Ford Foundation’s Creativity and Free Expression team and cultural organizations like The Lay Out, successfully elevating leaders into the public eye and fostering more inclusive narratives. In its first year, Pea Nation has achieved notable growth, expanding its services beyond traditional PR to include advising, audience building, leadership transitions, and creating impactful public conversations. The agency remains dedicated to elevating the visibility and influence of a diverse range of clients, from racial justice leaders and artists to innovative brands, philanthropies, cultural organizations, elected officials, and labor unions.

What makes your agency a great place in which to work? How have you fostered a positive workplace culture?

“This is our #1 priority. By creating an inclusive workplace and allowing team members to work in ways that are most effective to them, we are able to produce quality work for our clients. Example: our most junior colleague had zero communications experience. She started off providing admin support to Janna and eagerly jumped in to take on more. Everyone instantly saw her talent and each poured time into her, and her growth has been instrumental and reflective to the success of the company. We have a hybrid structure and push for asynchronous work as much as possible. This means limiting meetings and encouraging email communications when applicable. Our team trainings are conducted by all team members, not just Janna, as the belief is that we each have a skill and talent to offer. Having a practical work life balance, while building a new business, is KEY. Nearly everyone on this team comes from PR agency life, and whew – we are focused on creating different metrics and approaching core aspects of the work in a way that allows all parties to succeed.”
