Spring has sprung and I’m ready to be outside, see friends and restart my life. However, I’m also still anxious about COVID and not sure what I can and cannot do. Is networking IRL also going to be a thing again? And how can it be a thing without hugs, smiles and handshakes.
While networking IRL may look a bit different here are some of my “Covid safe” ways to network outside and start practicing networking IRL again.
Dogs: Dogs are natural conversation starters and a great way to break down barriers. If you need to start practicing your networking skills, getting/borrowing a friend’s dog is a great way to start striking up a conversation with like minded strangers. Bonus points if you exchange information, hey you’re doing it for the dog.
Waiting in line: Brunch is back and so is waiting in line for a reservation. Strike up a conversation with fellow line waiters. Great questions include asking about the menu and what you should order.
Shopping: Remember when we used to interact with the store team? It’s time to start practicing your small talk at local stores.
Lastly, turning your daily errands from coffee runs to grocery shopping to practice developing rapport, making eye contact and having a short conversation with a stranger. Who knows, that person might turn into a friend and better yet you’ll start feeling like a regular.
Do you have any ways that you’re practicing networking IRL?
