Day in the Life: Kevin Fegans

On Day in the Life, we get a glimpse inside the lives of various members. From PR industry insiders to media and event pros, we follow them through a typical (read: glam but busy) day.

This week, meet Kevin Fegans, founder of global brand strategy, marketing, and communications consultancy The Communications Bureau. It works out that the LA-based PR and marketing pro is a morning person, as his international business means office hours around the clock. What's also beneficial is that West Coast sunshine, which he gets his fill of via morning hikes and afternoon tennis. He shares his typical ongoings between that early alarm clock to after work perks.

5am: Good Morning

As a global marketing and communications consultant, many of my clients are based in Europe or on the East Coast; some of them are eight hours ahead.  Fortunately, I am an early riser and upon waking up, I check my emails and respond to any time-sensitive correspondence whether it be from the international press I am working with or my clients.  I also quickly scroll through my Twitter feed to get a quick summary of the news headlines.

6am: 9 am in NYC

7am: Morning Hike

Hiking is the social equivalent to meeting for drinks in NYC.  My wheaten terrier, Hudson, and I start the day at Runyon Canyon and on most mornings we invite a celebrity stylist, journalist, or industry friend for a “cardio catch-up”.

8:30am: Priorities of the Day

It’s essential that my team is aligned on the tasks and deliverables for our clients.   I prepare a list of priorities for each staff member keeping in mind the overarching brand strategy and the day to day requests to ensure everyone works efficiently.

9:30am: Breakfast at Soho House

I prefer breakfast meetings over lunch or dinner as it’s a great way to start your day.   In my experience, people are more focused in the morning before they become inundated with the tasks of the day which means my meetings are more productive.

11am: Client Calls

It is important to stay informed and up-to-date on our clients’ priorities to ensure everyone is aligned with the brand and business strategies.  Our clients value my expertise and use this time to ask for my advice on communications campaigns, marketing plans, and projects they are currently developing.  I am often referred to as an external CMO working closely with the leadership teams within their business.

1pm: Event Walk-Through
In preparation for an upcoming event, I make time to tour new venues and meet with their respective marketing, brand, and operations teams.  A few of my new favorite venues in Los Angeles are The Edition Hotel, San Vicente Bungalows, and the new rooftop at Palihouse West Hollywood.

3pm: Research, Strategy Planning and Daily Reading

This is the time of day when I can breathe a bit from the morning hustle, as Europe and New York are starting to wind down.  I usually take this time to read through flagged articles of interest, work on strategy decks for clients, and catch up on Instagram and magazines.

5pm: Tennis Time

Tennis is a form of meditation for me. It is a sport I love as a spectator and athlete. I have a hitting partner and coach I play with regularly at Beverly Hills Tennis.

7pm: Film Premiere

Earlier in my career, I spent most of my evenings out at events but am much more discerning about my personal time these days.  Still being fairly new to life in Los Angeles, the entertainment industry excites me. Every now and then, an invite for something special comes my way like the Judy premiere featuring Renee Zellwegger who I adore, so it was a must-attend event.
