Role Description: The Communications Manager is a vital member of the Jo Communications team, responsible for driving and managing strategic communications programs through information gathering, ideation, creative development, and the implementation of integrated communications and public relations initiatives. This role leads day-to-day account activities in our fast-paced agency while building and nurturing strong relationships with traditional and digital media, influencers, and industry partners to secure meaningful visibility for our clients. The ideal candidate brings strategic thinking, creativity, media savvy, diligence, and a can-do attitude — connecting ideas to measurable results while serving as a trusted partner to both clients and the Jo team.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Seek out fresh and strategic communications opportunities through consistent industry awareness and involvement.
  • Create and craft newsworthy, engaging story ideas that align with client goals.
  • Apply strong journalistic writing techniques to develop effective pitches, press materials, and other communications assets while ensuring accuracy through careful proofreading and editing.
  • Take the lead on media outreach initiatives, respond to media inquiries, and support story development from pitch to placement.
  • Build and nurture relationships with key media contacts, influencers, and industry partners.
  • Serve as an in-house publicist by proactively identifying media opportunities, trends, and story ideas for client accounts and the broader team.
  • Utilize resources such as Instagram and other industry platforms to stay informed on key voices, emerging trends, and opportunities within the design and lifestyle industries.
  • Collaborate with content team leads to develop creative communications solutions that advance client objectives.
  • Help drive the successful execution of strategic communications programs through creative ideas and visibility-generating initiatives.
  • Manage day-to-day account work and client projects while serving as a primary liaison between clients and internal team members.
  • Execute communications tactics, including media list development, editorial calendar tracking, press release and pitch development, media relations, influencer outreach, event support, and strategic partnerships.
  • Help drive internal workflows and coordinate with team members to ensure client deliverables, project expectations, and deadlines are met.
  • Oversee the preparation of meeting agendas, notes, media lists, activity reports, and media trackers.
  • Develop compelling content for websites, digital communications, social media, and marketing materials, as needed.
REQUIREMENTS:

Qualifications

  • University degree in a related field 3+ years of experience in public relations and/or communications
  • Proven experience building and maintaining strong relationships with editors, influencers, and other industry contacts, with a demonstrated ability to develop, pitch, and secure media coverage (experience in the design, hospitality, or lifestyle industries is a plus)
  • Strong track record of securing media placements
  • Keen interest in design and lifestyle products and services
  • Excellent reporting, writing, editing, and communication skills
  • Highly organized and proficient in multitasking and time management in a fast-paced environment 
  • Confident in leading client-facing communications
  • Experience managing team members to meet client deliverables and deadlines
