The Norton Museum of Art ventured to early 20th-century Spain for its exhibition Sorolla by the Sea.
The Museum celebrated the opening of the exhibition with a VIP reception to preview the exhibition of about 40 works by Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, on loan from the Hispanic Society Museum & Library.
On view through April 13, 2025, Sorolla and the Sea showcases the beach and sea scenes for which the painter became famous. It also includes portraits of Sorolla’s family members and such colleagues as Louis Comfort Tiffany. The exhibition marks the first time this collection from the Hispanic Society, a free public museum and reference library, has left New York in over 100 years.
Ghislain d’Humières, the Norton’s Kenneth C. Griffin Director and CEO, and Guillaume Kientz, CEO and Director of the Hispanic Society, offered remarks during the reception.
Guests enjoyed wine, cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres before venturing into the galleries for a tour of the exhibition. A select group of attendees was invited to a private dinner on the Colonnade, overlooking the Pamela and Robert B. Goergen Garden.
