The BET Awards were established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year. Categories included best R & B artist, video director of the year, best new artist and more. Nominees included The Weeknd, Missy Elliott and Hype Williams. Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar opened the show with a surprise performance.
