DIFFA’s 40th Anniversary Gala, held at the Lighthouse in New York, was a resounding success, and a truly moving experience. Coupled with the funds garnered from DIFFA's February Après-Ski fundraiser, DIFFA raised over $500,000 for the cause! Honoring the people and organizations who have made an impact, the Gala was a magical evening, which illuminated the resilience and compassion of the community. What began as a group of designers and manufacturers gathering in an NYC basement rallying to aid ailing friends amidst the shadow of a mysterious disease, has evolved into a catalyst for change— since it's founding DIFFA has given more than $55 million in grants. Today, DIFFA's mission extends beyond HIV/AIDS, embracing broader societal challenges like homelessness and mental wellness.
Honorees George Slowik, David Sheppard, David Rockwell, and Cindy Allen shared poignant remarks—Donna Fishel, as well as CFDA’s Fern Mallis and Steven Kolb provided moving tributes. Guests danced the night away and enjoyed fabulous performances from Tony Award® Winner Matt Doyle, renowned for his roles in "COMPANY" and "The Book of Mormon", and four-time Grammy Award® winner and musical director for Lady Gaga, Brian Newman. In a touching moment, DIFFA’s Steven Williams received well-deserved recognition for his unwavering dedication throughout the years.
Serving as a backdrop for the evening were custom-made quilts depicting Gensler's DIFFA logo made by Steelcase's Abigail French and her team of quilters from 15 years/3,000 lbs of salvaged textile samples from the A&D industry. These masterpieces became symbols of solidarity, and were auctioned off to support the cause. Thoughtfully designed installations by students at FIT, SVA, Pratt Insitute, and NYSID depicting each decade of DIFFA were also on display. The evening also served as a platform to honor the contributions of grantees and other critical cause-related organizations such as God’s Love We Deliver, Hetrick-Martin, Alpha Workshops, Housing Works, and the CDC—with representatives from many in attendance. It was an unforgettable evening and a testament to the power of compassion and community.
The DIFFA gala is just one of several 40th anniversary fundraising events this year. Lip Sync for Life—a drag event originally founded by DIFFA Chicago—is scheduled for the last week of June in conjunction with PRIDE festivities. Stay tuned for more details!
